Dipole at 20m, 2 ele Vert.
I havn't really been all that active in the weeks running up to this, wasn't
even sure I would be there at all untill the Thursday when I
discovered the weekend would be completly free.

Chuffed to break the 2k qso barrier from home, first time ever in any
contest. Actually made 2256 qsos but with a stack of dupes. That way exceeds
anything done from here before.
Only 350 NA and 1 JA ! A lot of qsos for little points, averaging only 1.4
per qso. Certainly feeling the lack of umph.

Very windy through Saturday morning. I made a decision to lower
the ants and get a few hours sleep during the afternoon it was that bad.

Amazing LP opening to JA 0900 Sunday morning, none of which could
hear me.

Had an AU drop over about 2000 Sunday. By 2100 any callers signals were a
stream of nonsense and completly unreadable. Started to recover by 2200.

Missed a load of heard stuff and also doubles like LU/13,
CE/12, XE/6, JT/23, UA0/19!
Lost the will to chase mults after the first night, packet pileups were
shocking. For dx the station was completly out classed anyway.

Shortskip signals were incredible, there were a bottomless pit of callers
from those areas.

EY8MM called me to ask to move to 80 near the end but I couldn't. I see from
3830 he was sb80. I sure hope he includes all the other band qsos becasue
this was my only Tajikistan mult.

Thanks everyone who called.

Comments:
Good contest.
This one is not at a good time for me. My birthday is on the 23rd so I seem
to spend half of the contest drunk and the other half hungover.
Station performed as I've grown to expect. Solid and competive towards the
east/south east and all round on shorter hops, and a complete dummy load
towards the west.
Only 339 qsos with NA and 35 with JA. Laughable really.
After using a decent station for wpx phone and the cqww's I can confidently
estimate I'm about 5-600 q's (and the mults that come with them) down from
dx areas. As I have no other choice, I can almost keep up the pace ratewise
making EU qsos, theres certainly enough activity, but in the end the the
impact the 3 point difference has on the score is too much. But with the
present setup I have now I can neither hear them or they hear me. The joys
of suburban contesting.
Heard M0C and GS2MP many times while tuning, they always seemed to be
running heavily people I couldn't even detect, I had to try and put that
in the back of my mind and carry on what I was doing, but it's never nice to
hear.
I'm sure they'll have impressive scores. gl.

Got called by quite a few semi-rare calls which is always nice. Also ZS6DX,
who I gather from reading 3830 was qrp and only made a handfull of qsos on
20m. Nice to think I was one of the few he got in the log. Managed to run
across GJ2A when he had no pileup, would have never made it if he had.

Condx in my view were average, I'd say the second day was certainly better
then the first. We had a storm pass over with a tremendous amount of static
rain during Saturday evening, I checked out and took an hour break while it
passed through. Seemed to expereience a slight glitch Sunday morning,
signals here became very attenuated during 0700-1000.

Once again, niggles on trying to hold run freq's against people who were way
out outside my filter. Seems unfair when I'm struggling to work the few DX
stations I can hear calling me near my noise floor when I'm getting qrm from
someone with an overly wide signal who would clearly be getting nothing back
from me. Quite a few times I'd have say s7 of qrm (not always clicks, but
actually being able to hear their tone) and I'd tune away to check their
signal and they would be quite a distance way, and at zero beat be almost
the same signal. It's quite easy to put it down to overload during peak
times when they are 40 over 9, but during the times when EU start to drop
away and the signals start dropping below s9 you can hear the problems are
still there.

Great activity all round which allowed to me keep putting calls in the log,
pity condx didn't pick up that little bit more so I could make it into a
few extra layers of NA but I supose this is the reality now the cycle is
declining. We're getting to the times when that extra 10db makes all
the difference.

Tnx everyone who called.

Insane high scoring system.
Condx were awfull.
Nearly nothing was breaking through from NA or JA. EU signals were heavily
attenuated and incredible qsb with callers going from over s9 to the noise
floor in the time it took to send the exchange.
Score may drop a little as I couldn't cfm a serial from a possible JA
mult. I rx'ed a number but I can't say 100% that what I rx'ed was correct.
I may drop them from the log. Shame really.

Bands seemed ok.
Had a problem come early Sunday morning, about 0600 on 15m. I had just
started to pick up a run, last qso was being called by ZC4DW then shortly
after the antenna appeared to go short circuit. I went outside, cranked it
over and pulled everythin to the ground to take a look to see if it was
anything obvious, I couldn't see anything. I called it a day right there and
went back to bed. :-(
Missed the important last 6-7 daylight hours, grrr

Please can I have my beams back, all this faffing around with bits of wire
is driving me nuts. I'd like to think that I'm as enthusiastic as the next
man when it comes to this aspect of the hobby, but being antenna challenged
is really starting to wear thin now...

Thanks all that called.

Did RDXC so not much time for this.
After the really naff conditions in the Sunday morning, things were still
not 100% by the afternoon.
Some nice DX around though.
Might seriously try this one sometime, although RDXC is a killer contest.
Bad clash of dates, sorry guys...

Good start on Saturday, band finally went out at about 20:00.
Finished on the first day with 891 q's
Ended up with a total on Sunday of 1086. That pretty much sums up how bad
Sunday's conditions were here.

Had a run in with a UA9, who came up a few 100hz away at about 40 over 9
deciding he wanted to take the freq.
After I while when I hadn't moved he came zero beat with me, 10 mins later
he moved away a little and a 2nd station came on telling me to qsy, after
this he started cq'ing using the same call and zero beat with me while the
original was still a few hundred down. Funny thing was, the second station
started used the same cq sound file as the original but if anyone answered
him the op had a completely different voice. This went on for a while but
the original UA was still too close to me and clearly having difficulty
making qsos through my cq's needing 9-10 shots at serials. Eventually the
original UA came back zero beat and started rag chewing with the second UA
in Russian. After chatting in Russian for a further 5 mins the original UA
moved and left the second station cq'ing. The second station was no where
near as strong and the rate recovered and worked through him easily, when he
realised this he simply resorted to jammed anyone who answered me.
I'm just glad I had the whole thing recorded, quite frankly you can't make
up stories worse than this. Incredibly bad behaviour.

On the whole a very disapointing end to a promising start. Great contest
though.

Band seemed good at all distances. Although still a little light on ON's,
worked 22. Missed all UK mults except M.
First few hours were good and as always turned into a real slog towards the
end.
Some of the ON's were great, most were a whisper here and they stuck with me
to the end to complete the qso.

Thanks everyone who called,

Another 'part time effort' to add to the pile.
I wouldn't mind a serious pop at this contest some time, but not from
home.
Did about 10 hours on Sunday, started at 1200 when I got up and finished at
2200ish. Made a few q's on 15 but didn't have the contest log running.
I spent a lot of time on Saturday listening round and following some of the
UK op's while I relaxed in the shack.
I heard a lot POI on 20m during the day, and a lot of M5X on 15, when I was
listening around.
I think they may have been SB's also.

Good contest.
A little bit annoyed with myself making bad choices with my time off. I took
a large chunk off Saturday night when really I should have took it Sunday.
I'm not quite used to 'having' to take breaks, I would have happily worked
through if I could.

Thanks everyone who called.

Comments.
The high K index really messed things up. The openenings around EU were very
selective.
Hardly any short hop propagation to ON from here. Only got called by 1 ON
the others had to found and even then they were very weak and quite tough to
complete a qso with. Only worked/heard 4 all contest, as 50+ of the
available mults come from Belgium the chances of scoring were almost
impossible this weekend.
Called it a day at around 19:00, came back 08:00 next morning and carried
on.
Made quater of my qso total in the first hour.
Highlights were being called by SU1ER and ST2NH. Although for this contest
they counted as minimum points and no mult!

Great scores again I see.

Managed a few hours at high power. Got a knock about 16:00 and had to drop
to a couple of hundred to keep them happy. I left the DVK calling while I
was talking at the front door, so if you called I'm sorry.
Same setup as last week except I tried a reflector this time, very simple
affiar at about shoulder hieght. Did it make any difference? Who knows,
didn't feel like it. My first hour was still appauling.
Seems like my signal still wasn't loud enough to be heard at the start. I
was working folks over on the other vfo with serials 25-35 higher just under
an hour into the contest, while I was cq'ing to fresh air on my run freq 25k
below them. Really wierd stuff.

Quite a few dupes, but thats how it goes. I work and log em all.
Thanks everyone that called.

Good contest, lots of activity, band was rammed and a joy to hear. Heard
some superb scores during the contest, and some great scores posted so far.
Don't know what happened here, I can't explain it. Could not get anyone to
hear me it appears. Must try harder in the signal department.

Ran for 3 hours 30mins, S&Ped for 30mins.
Looking back through the log only 30% ! of the qsos came from cq'ing. The
rest were made through the 2nd vfo and during the S&P. If I appeared to not
quite inside your filter when I called I'm sorry :)
Made 1 dupe myself, BWP I think it was. The others from callers.

Thanks to all who called, I made a few neat audio clips which should make it
up on the my website in a week or two when all is finished.
See you all in SBB with a stronger signal I hope. I'll perhaps try a
reflector underneath. Any comments/experiences from doing this are welcome.

Comments.

First contest of 2003, and first chance I've had to try Writelog for any
length of time on a new WinXP machine.

The latest MMTTY version seemed 200% better rx-wise, I can only think of a
few signals I had to let go because of flutter or low signal. Dunno what
he's changed but it works.

Thanks everyone who called and said Hi.
